# Scribble-math package installation error

**W** hile trying to (re)install the **`scribble-math` package** (using the `Package Manager`, under `DrRacket`), currently I get the following error:

```scheme
Downloading repository https://gitea.suzanne.soy/suzanne.soy/scribble-math.git#main commit a69b6fad193757de5a62b6a1cabacb7557d02ff7
ssl-connect: connect failed (error:0A0000C6:SSL routines::packet length too long)

```

The `scribble-math` **is a great and very useful package** , _because it allows to write LaTeX style expressions (easily) in our scribble documents._ (_I use it, almost daily for notes, quizzes and exams_).

**Thank you in advance for any suggestion or support to fix this problem**.

P. S. The same problem occurs under DrRacket 8.16 as well as 8.17 version. Before, when I used "_copy from version_", to migrate packages from 8.15 to 8.16, _I didn't encounter this problem_.

I believe that Suzanne's github hosting site has been down for some time. You can look into some of the snapshots at [https://racksnaps.defn.io/](https://racksnaps.defn.io/), the 2024-11-16 snapshot I tried worked for scribble-math.

**T** hank you @samth for the identification of a working _snapshot_ for `scribble-math`. I hope the great job done by Suzanne with this package, is recovered somehow, in order to work properly again, under the `Package Manager.`

The utility of this package and the way it complement the `scribble language`, makes `scribble-math` (_in my opinion_) _a good **candidate** to be included in the **main distribution** _. Being in the main distribution, _it would be easier to use the package, and teach others about it_, and also, _it would increase the chance to be updated when needed_.

Thank you again for your _support_ and comments on this issue.

It looks like the mentioned commit is also the tip of the main branch of the Github repository, so you could install from there: [https://github.com/SuzanneSoy/scribble-math](https://github.com/SuzanneSoy/scribble-math)

**T** hank you @LiberalArtist for the alternatives to install `scribble-math`. _ **I was able to install it** _ using the reference shared by @samth:  
I just used the `Package Manager` from `DrRacket`, and add to _Settings_ the line: `https://racksnaps.defn.io/snapshots/2024/11/16/catalog/`

_ **Thank you both** , for your prompt support_. _I hope that in the future_ we can again, use the _default catalogues_ in the `Package Manager` to install this **very useful`scribble-math`** package (which, BTW generates also great graphics with the support of [Asymptote](https://asymptote.sourceforge.io/)).

**C** urrently, the installation of `scribble-math` package, is **working fine** (from my experience) using the `Package Manager`, **with the default catalogues**. _Thank you for that_.

As an _opportunity to improve the Racket documentation_ with `scribble-math`, using this package, we can e_asily rewrite_ the _mathematical expressions_ related to the **Fresnel integrals** , documented at the end of **section 3.1 Real Functions** in the link: [3&nbsp;Special Functions](https://docs.racket-lang.org/math/special.html#(part._real-functions)).

It's now January 2026, and the ssl-connect issue appears to have been continuously a problem for nearly a year. Would it make sense to create a new package that contains this code? The repository contains the text of the LGPL3, which suggests that there's no copyright problem with this.

To be clear, I would like to support suzanne soy's continued maintenance and development of this code, if there's any way to make that possible.

I should also add: I have a fork of the github repo, at [GitHub - jbclements/scribble-math: Integration of MathJax, KaTeX and Asymptote with scribble, to typeset math in Racket documentation](https://github.com/jbclements/scribble-math/) , which contains two additional commits that I was hoping to get pushed to the package.

Perhaps their packages could be updated to use the GitHub mirrors  
instead? (I don't know if there's ongoing maintenance there to accept  
a PR for your other contributions though.)

Preferably Suzanne would make the change (or at least consent to it), of course.

In my mind (and to be clear, I don't think we have any community guidelines here), the existing package-name ("scribble-math") is "owned" by Suzanne, so the non-toe-steppy way to do this would be to create a new package name and encourage others to refer to the new one rather than the old one. I'm not sure how many other packages, if any, currently refer to scribble-math and would need to be updated. Would this set a bad precedent? If no one objects, I might just create this package ("scribble-math-2"), in order to get this off my plate. I'd be happy to delete the package or update it to some kind of redirect statement, if Suzanne repairs the existing entry.

This is a dilemma.

On one hand I don't like taking over a package name.

However, the current `scribble-math` package can't currently be installed  
and the intention of Suzanne must be for people to use the package.

That combined with the relative large number of uses:

If none has succeeded in contacting Suzanne, I think, it would be best if @jbclements made a `scribble-math` package and make the package server use that version.

If Suzanne returns, we can always give the package name back.

So none of those mzny packages can be used currently because  
scribble-math is uninstallable?

If you have `scribble-math` installed already there is no problems.

However, if you need to install `scribble-math` on a new system (or are a new user),  
the usual automatic installation fails. You can manually install it from an archived version, but it is a bit cumbersome - and you need to know what caused your installation problem.

Hey! Looks like it's up again! Suzanne Soy, if you can read this, would you consider making (e.g.) Jens Soegaard an additional author on the scribble-math package? This could potentially help to avoid this kind of outage in the future?

😕 CI just failed for a package of mine that transitively depends on scribble-math for docs. So may not be up?

Thank you very much in advance for making the necessary changes in order to maintain the _very good and really useful_ `scribble-math` package.

_Observation_: _if it were possible_, you can consider the proposed easy changes to the file `dollar.rkt` indicated in the comment at [https://github.com/SuzanneSoy/scribble-math/commit/a69b6fad193757de5a62b6a1cabacb7557d02ff7#commitcomment-137014392](https://github.com/SuzanneSoy/scribble-math/commit/a69b6fad193757de5a62b6a1cabacb7557d02ff7#commitcomment-137014392). The indicated changes, complete the previous efforts, to specify a `path` to the `katex` (or `mathjax`) _folder_, **in order not to generate locally that folder** , **each time we generate the Scribble document**. _This functionality is very welcome when we generate multiple documents in the same folder or very near folders in our directory tree_.

_Thank you again and congratulations for all your support_ concerning **LaTeX** related capabilities for `Scribble`, `Plot` and beyond.

2. Suzanne is apparently having some hosting issues:
