I am a little concerned about attendance for this event in 6 days. Approximately the entire adult population of Scotland is in Boston, with no sign of departing soon. Bars are literally running out of lager. :grinning_face:

Rhombus 1.0 and mathematical visualization

Rhombus reached 1.0, which led into the picture competition and a discussion about mathematical visualization, especially Escher-inspired graphics.

Fish, pict, and Racket graphics

From there we drifted into Racket's pict library and the surprisingly recurring role of fish in examples and demos, which reminded us of the Fargo fish poster.

RacketCon

With RacketCon approaching we talked about the upcoming call for talks. I mentioned Duncan's PhD work in Glasgow around RDF as something that could make an interesting presentation.

Learning continuations

I'm currently trying to understand continuations, so I shared the material I'd been watching:

Sigil, Guile, and David Thompson

We then talked about Sigil (David Wilson's Scheme language for Guile—not the unrelated language with the same name), which naturally led to discussing the Guile ecosystem.

Remembering Guile projects brought up David Thompson's work:

We talked about how Chickadee was followed by Catbird, and how nowadays Guile Hoot has largely become the project people associate with that space.

Heatwave and the London Underground

While chatting about the current heatwave and why parts of the London Underground become so unbearably hot, I shared this short by Hannah Fry

Chess

The conversation then wandered into chess.

That reminded me of the Rust conference talk by the Edinburgh developer who built both the strongest UK chess engine and the strongest chess engine written in Rust.

Rust macros and Dave Herman

Since we were already talking about Rust, we discussed its macro system and the influence of Dave Herman—one of the key Racket macro researchers—on Rust's macro design.

I also shared Brian Anderson's article about one of Rust's most underappreciated contributors.
